Parable FAQsÂ
Who is the Parable designed for?
Parable gives sailors with extra accessibility needs the chance to progress their sailing to a higher performance platform, that combines stability with all the performance features seen on a modern one-design boat.
Is the Parable designed to be raced?
Absolutely. Parable was created to give sailors with disabilities a genuine racing experience in a modern, performance-focused one-design boat. Its optimised hull shape, hybrid weighted keel, self-draining cockpit, contemporary sail plan, carbon spars, and high-quality componentry deliver the speed, responsiveness, and durability needed for competitive racing. Parable is a one-design class, so boats are built to the same measurements for fair racing, while still being stable and confidence-inspiring for training and coaching.
Is the Parable suitable for beginner sailors and club learn-to-sail programmes
Yes, Parable offers next level versatility – its stable platform, self-draining cockpit, customisable seating, user-friendly controls, sail wardrobe, rig configuration, beach trolley along with a payload of 240kg’s make it ideal for beginners and learn-to-sail club programmes. And because the boat is performance focused, beginner sailors can progress quickly in the Parable, from learning sailing basics to more advanced skills like asymmetric sailing, sail controls and weight placement.
Can the Parable be launched easily?
Yes. The lifting keel and removable twin rudders make it straightforward to launch from a beach trolley, ramp, or hoist (depending on your set-up).
What seating options are available?
Options range from a simple bench for those with full body strength to moulded polymer chairs with full backs and sides for those needing more support.
How does the steering system work?
Steering is via twin (removable) rudders. The system has a rectangular axle running the length of the cockpit floor. A steering lever such as a straight bar or teardrop loop can be fitted to the axle at any point along its length and adjusted during sailing.
What sail configurations are available?
Parable can be sailed in a two- or three-sail set-up: a reefable mainsail, self-tacking jib, and an optional modern asymmetric gennaker. Sails were designed and are built by Doyle Sails. The main and jib are made from a Pentex material. The Gennaker is light dacron.
How accessible is the sail and rig control system?
Controls are centrally positioned at the base of the mast and controlled by quick release cleats that can be operated with a single finger. There is space in the cockpit to allow for additional fittings to adjust the handling of the rigging to suit the abilities of individual sailors and for the installation of adaptive sailing equipment such as sip and puff controllers etc.
What can be changed on the Parable?
As a one-design class, the hull, spars, and sails are built to class measurements by certified builders so these can’t be altered for racing. The cockpit layout, seating configuration, and some control positions can be adjusted to suit the sailor’s needs.
How is the Parable different from other boats used for adaptive sailing or learn-to-sail programmes?
Parable was developed with significant input from sailors with disabilities. It combines customisable seating (4 seating options) and adjustable steering options with modern performance features—like carbon spars and an efficient rig, plus practical launching via beach trolley or hoist. Combine its stability with a 240 kg payload capacity, it has the flexibility to be sailed by one person and up to around four people (depending on conditions and set-up).
How is the Parable so stable?
Stability comes from a combination of design choices, especially the lifting keel with a 60 kg lead bulb that helps keep the boat upright. The rig and sail plan are also balanced to deliver performance while remaining confidence-inspiring.
